NotでもNeverでも。
- -ing ..., SVX.
- -having p.p. ..., SVX.
- p.p. ..., SVX.
- adj. ..., SVX.
- noun ..., SVX.
- S' + -ing ..., SVX.
- S' + -having p.p. ..., SVX.
- S' + p.p. ..., SVX.
- S' + adj. ..., SVX.
- S' + noun ..., SVX.
- when (while, as soon as など) [時]
- as (since, because など) [理由・原因]
- if (even if, suppose など) [条件・仮定]
第32回 - with + X1 + X2
"to + -ing"の形
- look forward to -ing(-するのを期待して待つ)
- be used to -ing(-するのに慣れている)
- object to -ing(-することに反対する)
- have no objection to -ing(-するのに異議はない)
- What do you say to -ing ...?(-
- with a view to -ing(-する目的で)
- devote onself to -ing(-に専心する)
- come near (to) -ing(もう少しで-しそうになる)
- mind -ing(-するのを気にかける)
- enjoy -ing(-するのを楽しむ)
- give up -ing(-するのを諦める)
- avoid -ing(-するのを避ける)
- finish -ing(-するのを終える)
- admit -ing(-するのを認める)
- stop -ing(-するのを止める)
Do you mind if - ? / Would you mind if S V-ed - ?
- consider -ing(-することを考える)
- escape -ing(-するのを逃れる)
- *leave off -ing(するのをやめる)
- *put off -ing(-するのを延期する)
- cannot help -ing(-するのを我慢できない)
stop -ingとstop to -の区別
- He stopped thinking of her.(彼は彼女の子おを考えるのをやめた)
- He stopped to think of her.(彼はふと彼女のことを思い出した)
のto think ...
remember -ingとremember to -
want, need, deserve, be worth + -ing
- of one's (own) -ing
- There is no -ing. <=> It is impossible to -.
- On -ing ... <=> When ... / As soon as ...
Do you mind my smoking here?のmyなど。
- It is no use [no good] -ing(-
- It is worth while -ing(-
- *insist on -ing(-するのを主張する)
- *approve of -ing(-するのに賛成する)
- feel like -ing(-したい気がする)
- *make a point of -ing(-することにしている)
- prevent ... (from) -ing(...
- *thank you or -ing(-してくれてありがとう)
- *cannnot[never] ... without -ing(...

- charge(請求される代金)
His point of vew is quite different from mine.
- a + 名詞 -> one
- the + 名詞 -> it(またはthat, またはthe one)
名詞にthis, that, a, anがつくと"of -"の-にはmine, yours, his, hers, oursなどの独立所有格がくる。
- that sister of yours(あなたのあのお姉さん)
- a friend of mine(私の友だち[のひとり])
- this umbrella of his(彼のあの傘)
- that handbag of hers(彼女のあのハンドバッグ)
- that lover of my father's(うちのおやじのあの愛人)
- "A is one thing, an B is another."(AとBとは別のことだ)
同様に、another two days(もう2日), another five dollars(あと5ドル), another six months(あと半年)など。
each other / one another(おたがい"に")は、副詞ではなく、代名詞!
an SOS signalやa European country、a UFOなど。
an Einstein(アインシュタインのような人)や、A Mr. Smith(スミスさんとかいう人)など。
「…につき」(== per)の用法のa: three times a week(1週間に3回)、ten times a year(1年に10回), at eighty kilometers an hour(時速80キロで)など
Idioms: a number of (ある数の) (a == some), in a hurry(急いでいる), as a rule(通例は), all of a sudden(突然に)
またby the dozen(ダース単位で)、by the hour(1時間で)などは必ずthe。
- A stranger seized by the arm.(見知らぬ人が私の腕のところをつかんだ)
- The police man caught the robber by the arm.(警官は泥棒の片腕をつかんだ)
- He pulled her by the pigtail.(彼は彼女のお下げ髪を引っ張った)
- He passed me on the shoulder.(私の肩をぽんとたたいた)
- She kissed him on the check.(彼のほおにキスした)
- She looked me in the face.(私の顔をまともに見た)
by train, by air, *by car, *by bicycle, *by land, *by sea
He is butcher by trade.のby trade, by profession; by nameなども無冠詞
比較のasとso, tooでは、語順が(as / so / too) + 形容詞 + a + 名詞になる。
数 | *a great many(かなり多くの) / *a good many / a number of(ある数の) / *a multitude of(多数の) |
量 | a great deal of(多量の) |
数・量 | a lot of[lots of](多くの |
convenient(便利な都合のよい)は人を主語にしない。
- be able to -([人が]-することができる)
- be capable of -(-する能力がある)
- it is possible to - (-する事が可能だ)
You are able to master English <=> it is possible for you to master English.
- It is difficult for me to -
- I'm glad -
- I'm sorry -
- He is happy -
値段・物価が | high(高い) | low(安い) |

- credulous(信じやすい、だまされやすい)
- ingenious(器用な、巧妙な)
- ingenuous(率直な)
"I didn't tell anyone; honestly I didn't."
比較級の強調にはmuch(far, even, still, yet)を使い、原級の強調にはveryを使う。
already, still, yet
- late(遅く、遅れて)
- lately(最近、近頃)
- hard(一生けんめい)
- How far(距離)
- How long(期間)
- How many(数)
- How much(量・値段)
- How soon(あとどのくらいで)
- How often(何回/どのくらいの周期で)
- What do you think of - ?
- What do you htink about - ?
- How do you like - ?(-はどうですか;どのくらい気に入っていますか)
(I like it) Very much."
- What is the weather like?
- How is the weather?
- Why don't you - ?(-したらどう?)
- What makes you think so?
- Why do you think so?
- Who do you work for?(お勤めはどちらですか)
- Who do you think the writer of this novel is?
- How do you think Japan's ecconomy will be in the future?
- Do [Would] you mind -ing ...?(-
- Do [Would] you mind if ...?(...
No, not at all. / Certainly not. / Not in the least. / No, of course not.
I'd rather you didn't.(そうしないでいただきたい)など。
- Can [May] I ask you a favor?
- Will [Would] you do me a favor?
- I have a favor to ask you.
- I wonder if you'd ...(...
- Sure. What do you need?(いいとも。
- Yes, if I can. What is it?(ええ、私にできることなら。
- Well, that depends on what it is.(そうですね、事と次第によりますが)
He went to the door, which he was surprised to find open.は、
- He went to the door.
- He was surprised to find it open.
- Please tell me all that you have to say.(あなたが言いたいこと(心の中に思っている事)を全部言ってくれ)
- John died, and Bill was the only son that she had to love.(ジョンが死んでしまい彼女が可愛がる息子はビルだけになってしまった)
A person who we think is coward sometimes prove to be brave.
- A person sometimes prove to be brave.
- We think he is coward.
だからwho
A person whom we think to be a coward sometimes prove to be brave.
- A person sometimes prove to be brave.
- We think him to be coward.
だからwhom
- The building is our church.
- You can see its roof over there.
The building whose roof you can see over there is our church.
- He has a large collection of books.
- Many of them are written in English.
He has a large collection of books, many of which are written in English.
- My uncle has just paid me a visit.
- Through his kindness I got my present job.
My uncle, through whose kindness I got my present job, has just paid me a visit.
- where(== in which)
- why(== for which)
- how(先行詞the wayは必ず省略される)
that
all the - / the first - / the only - / the very -などはthatになりやすい、というだけで絶対ではない。
- Read the passage in which I reffered in my lecture.
- The conditions under which these fine works were created were usually of a most difficult kind.
- He has four daughters, who became teachers.
- <=>He has four of daughters, all of whom became teachers.
第46回 - as, which, what , whoever
as
- As is often the case with him, he came home after midnight.
such ... as -のasは関係代名詞で、such ... that - のthatは接続詞なので注意。
what
- Andy is to Betty what Charles was to Diana.
whoever
- whoever == anyone who
- whomever == anyone whom(ただしあまり使われない)
- She told me just as much [as that].
She is as beautiful as a monkey.
not so much A as B
- <= B rather than A「AというよりはむしろBだ」(A<B)
- The girl cannnot so much as spell her own name.(その女の子は自分の名前を綴る(といった程度の)事すらできない」
- He went out without so much as saying "Good-bye!"(彼はさようならも言わずに行ってしまった)
as many
- He has two girlfriends, but he wishes to have as many more.(彼には二人ガールフレンドがいるが、もう二人ほしがっている)
- The children were working like so many ants.(子供たちはまるで同じ数の蟻のように働いていた)
as many moreというのはつまり、two many moreという事。
so many、as manyは「同数の」という意味。
- So much for today.
第48回 - as long asとas far as、あとso ... as -
so ... as -
as ... as - とso ... as -は本質的には同じ。
as long asとas far as
辞書的にはwhile(-の間)やif only(-である限りは)の2つの意味で書かれるがそんなに違う物ではない。
- so far as[as far as] ... be concerned(...
so far as I concerned, は口語ではpersonally / As for me[myself] / For my own part, / Speaking for myself, / I, for me
- China is large.
- China is as large as Japan.
- China is twenty times as large as Japan.
twenty timesの部分にはhalf(半分)、twice(2倍)、three times(3倍)、one-fifth(5分の1)、a million times(百万倍)などが入る。
- San Francisco is one-eigh as populous as New York.
- The population of new york is eight times as large as that of San Francisco.
that of(== the population)が抜けないようにと、populationに対応する形容詞はlarge / smallだという事に注意。
more A than B
- My father is more wise than intelligent.
more A than BはA rater than Bに近い表現。
the 比較級 of the two
- This color is the better of the two for the new design.
比較級がof the twoを伴う時は特にtheがついて"the 比較級 of the two"の形になる。
3つの物を比較する時はthe best of three
比較級 + than any other + (単数)名詞
- She can swim faster than anyone else in her class.
- be superior to - (より優れている)
- be inferior to - (より劣っている)
- be senior to - (-より年上だ)
- be junior to - (-より年下だ)
- be preferable to -(-より望ましい)
- know better than to - (==wise enough not to, -するより分別がある, 分別があるから-しない, -するほどバカではない)
- make the most of - (-を最大限に利用する)
the 比較級 for -
- I like the girl all the better for her modesty.
- BIll said that he loved her none the less her faults.
The 比較級 ..., the 比較級 ...
- The more students use English, the better they will become at using English.
後半のthe betterのbetterがthey will become better at using Englishという分のbetterであるという事を忘れがちなので注意。
- The more interested you are in girls, the more ...(女の子たちに興味ひかれる程)
- The more girls you are interested in, the more ...(興味ひかれる女の子の数が多くなる程)
- Man thinks of nothing more than of death.(死ほど人が(たくさん)考えるものはない)
- Man thinks of nothing less than of death.(死ほと人が(少ししか)考えないものはない)
- Nothing less than an attack was expected.(攻撃くらいはあるだろうと思われた)
- Nothing was less expected than an attack.(よもや攻撃があるとは思われなかった)
- A is not bigger than B.(A≤B)
- A is no bigger than B.(A == B)(<==> A is as small as B)
not moreやnot any moreもこれと同様。
- It is true that love is important. Still, money is no less important.(愛情が大切なのは事実だが、それでもなおお金も同じように大切だ)
第54回 - no less than - / no more than - の書き換え
no more than - | only - | たったの- |
not more than - | at most - | 多くてもせいぜい- |
no less than - | as many as - / as much as - | -も |
not less than - | at least - | 少なくとも- |
ただI hope not.やI'm afraid not.
- Never have so many women recieved Ph. D degrees as today.
- His parents aren't both alive.
- Neither of his parents is alive.
- I didn't understand all of his speech.
- I didn't understand any of his speech.
- anything but - (-では絶対にない)
- last ... to - (絶対に-しない)
- not at all(まったく)
- far from -(-からほど遠い)
- above -ing(-するような程度を越している / 絶対に-などしない)
- not ... in the least(少しも...でない)
- not ... for the life of me(どうしても...でない)
- by no means(決して...でない)
- free from - (-から解放されている)
- fail to - (-しない, できない)
- cannot ... too - (...
Now that /= Since。"Now that ..."
lest someone should do -(someoneが-しないように、)のshouldに否定は不要。
- However cold it is, she always goes swimming.
- No matter how cold it is, she always goes swimming.
- No matter what the weather is like, the regatta will be held.
- Whatever the weather is like, the regatta will take place.
if any, if everは省略されている文を考えればわかる。
- I am not rich, nor do I wish to be.
- S + V (and|or|but) S + V :
- I felt pity at the sight of these helpless people.
- I felt pity when I saw these helpless people.
- Did anybody come in my absence?
- Did anybody come while I was absent?[I was away / I was out]
- We shall start regardless of the weather.
- We shall start whether it is fine or rainy.
- As for me, I have no objection.
- As far as I am concerned, it's all right.
- He will be get better before long.
- It will not be long before he gets better.
- I can never see this ring without thinking of her.
- Whenever I see this ring, I think of her.
- The ring always reminds me of her.
remind A of Bは、AにBを思い出させるの意味。
- On arriving at the station, she called me.
- As soon as she arrived at the station, she called me.
- He cried as soon as he saw it.
- No sooner had he seen it than he cried.
- (Hardly|Scarcely) had he seen it (when|befoce) he cried.
- The (moment|instant) he saw it, he cried.
- (Directly|Immediately) he saw it, he cried.
- at ten
- in the morning
- on Monday
- on the 24th
- in February
- in winter
- in 1985
